Tuning project

In the summer of 2000, a group of universities designed a pilot project called "Tuning Educational Structures in Europe". The Tuning project, now in its third phase and involving over 150 higher education institutions working within nine subject groups, addresses several of the Bologna action lines.[1] More specifically, the project aims at identifying points of reference for generic and subject-specific competences of graduates in the subject areas: Business Administration, Chemistry, Education Sciences, European Studies, Geology, History, Mathematics, Nursing and Physics. The name Tuning reflects the idea that universities do not look for harmonisation of their degree programmes or any sort of unified, prescriptive or definitive European curricula but simply for points of reference, convergence and common understanding. In its third phase, Tuning has been extended to include a number of Thematic Networks. The main aim of the project is to contribute to the elaboration of national ↑qualifications frameworks in the signatory countries of the ↑Bologna Process, which are described in terms of ↑workload, level, ↑learning outcomes, ↑competences and profile. The Tuning project developed a methodology and a common language, reflected in the Berlin Communiqué (2003), which also made it possible to develop the overarching framework for qualifications in Europe.[2]
